The following maps show the southern wagon route taken by settlers going to California. This route was based on a combination of early migration routes, cattle routes, and ancient Indian trails. The southern wagon route was later used by the Butterfield Overland Express to carry mail from St. Louis to San Francisco. Since the so-called “Butterfield Trail” is well-known in literature, it has become synonymous with the Southern Wagon Route and provides most of the contemporary knowledge of the southern wagon route. These maps have been annotated with the place names mentioned by John J. Poill in the articles by Fred Lockley (see Jan 24, 1924, Feb 25, 1924) describing his early life. |
