Lane Co, OR is the locus of many events in the proof that John J. Poill was John H. Pyle.  This web page brings together the Lane Co information which will be useful for understanding and proving the theory that John J. Poill is John H. Pyle.

One gnarly point that must be overcome in  the proof that John J. Poill was in fact John H. Pyle is to account for how John J. Poill ended up in the tiny village of Cloverdale in Pleasant Hill Twp in Lane Co, OR (see map) to marry my Great grandmother Mila Ann Eaton in 1872.

Where is Cloverdale?

Cloverdale is about 12 miles southeast of the Eugene / Springfield metro area.

The Eatons of Cloverdale

Mila Ann Eaton was born the daughter of Joseph Eaton and Susan Matilda Copeland in Stoddard Co, MO in 1856.  The family later migrated to Jackson Co, MO.  Joseph Eaton’s younger brother, Alex Eaton migrated to Oregon in the 1850s and was granted a donation land claim in Pleasant Hill Twp in Lane Co, OR near Cloverdale.  After the death of Mila Ann Eaton’s mother in 1868 (Susan Matilda Copeland), the family moved out to Oregon and settled near Alex Eaton in the vicinity of Cloverdale.  Joseph Eaton’s other brother, William Eaton settled in this same area with his family.

Thus, by the 1870 federal census, several Eaton families including the families of the three Eaton brothers (William, Alex, Joseph) were in the Cloverdale area and listed in the census as follows:

William Eaton Family (Line 1)

Alex Eaton Family (Line 29)

Joseph Eaton Family (Line 15)

Isabel Eaton (mother of Alex, Joseph, William (Line 31)

The Marriage of John J. Poill and Mila Ann Eaton

John J. Poill and Mila Ann Eaton were married on Aug 29, 1872.  Notice that in their marriage license that Alexander Eaton (Mila Ann’s uncle) presented the affidavit that Mila Ann was “above the age of 15 years” and that the “written consent of the parents of said Mila A. Eaton having been filed herein.”  The ceremony was held in the home of Joseph Eaton.  The minister and witness at the wedding are listed in the 1870 census:

Samuel Dillards (Minister) (Line 20)

William Davidson (Witness) (Line 1)
